Norman Lear Trans Comedy ‘Clean Slate’ Canceled by Amazon – ryan
Amazon’s Streaming Service, Prime Video, Has Canceled the Legendary Norman Lear‘s Final Television Series, Clean Slate. The comedy, which starred Orange is the new black Standout Laverne Cox and Comedian George Wallace, was well-reged by Critics and Audiences Alike, and told a timely languages featuring a transgender actress, but that failed to sway the company into giving it a second season. The News was first reported by Deadlinein A Guest Column Penned by Cox, Wallace, and Co-Creator Dan Ewen.
Though only first reported on Friday, April 18, the heartfelt and earnest pieces from its creative team revealed that the series was actually canceled back at the end of March, barely a month after the show premiered (to positive reviews and an an 89% Fresh Score on Rotten Tomatoes). It’s hard not to wonder if the series’ subject matter – which ghosts directly to the highly politicized issue of transgender people and their rights – didn’t play a part in the show’s cancellation, given how hard the Trump administration has come on the community. After all, many companies are falling in line with the United States President’s Desire to DisMantle Dei Efforts Across the Country, Amazon included. The Company’s Founder, Jeff Bezos, also donated large sums of money to his campaign.

‘Clean Slate’ was “A Seven-Year Effort” and Labor of Love from Its Creators
The show’s premise is a computing one, and its timeliness to our political climate has been called “A Parting Gift” from the Legendary, Culture-Shifting, Game-Changing Comedy Icon Norman Lear Prior to His passing in December 2023. Lest anyone here forget, Lear created All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, Good Times, Maude, The Facts of Life, And many, many more. So the Norman Lear Stamp of Approval was undoubtedly a welcome one to Wallace, Ewen, and Cox.
According to them, the series’ premise (and cox in particular) did for him what so many of his shows did for so many others: taught them something about humanity through humor. “Norman Shook his head in Amazement,” The Columnists wrote. “He looked at us, collecting his thoughts before asking, ‘I’m almost a hundred years old. How have I just learned so much about something so important?” “
They went on to add:
Laverne, One of Precious Few Alabamans to appear on both the cover of ‘Time ‘ Magazine and ‘British Vogue‘had spent the prior 90 minutes entertaining dozens of questions about transness from the ever-curious Norman. It was a fantastic conversation, and we would Wager it was Norman’s first meeting where he would find himself addressed as “guuuurl” 17 times.
Some of Lear’s Questions were too personal, some overly medical. Laverne’s retort, “That information is between me and my doctor and my boyfriend,” would end up in the pilot script. But Norman’s Questions were evidence of a mind that had remained open, decades after most people’s have welded shut and whatnot.
The whole piece is a heartbreaking, insightful, and wonderful read about a series that has, with any luck, not seen the last of its days. The creators noted that they would be doing their own, homegrown for your consideration campaigning as they searched for a new home for the series.
