But the World Gratitude Day, which is celebrated on September 21, gives us the opportunity to express gratitude. This gratitude is useful to reduce stress, improve mental health and strengthen relationships. ‘World Gratitude Day’ began in 1965 during a thanksgiving dinner by spiritual leader Shri Chinmay and suggested to celebrate the Thanksgiving Day all over the world. In this gathering, spiritual leader Shri Chinmay presented the concept of a world holiday to express gratitude. The participants who were present during the dinner promised that they would celebrate each year in their respective countries. The following year, on September 21, 1966, ‘World Gratitude Day’ was celebrated for the first time. In 1977, the United Nations officially acknowledged it and since then it is celebrated every year. On this day, we express happiness with gratitude to each other. If someone takes the step of collaboration for us, it’s a special day for us. The importance of this day is unlimited. Modern science also recognizes the power of gratitude. Studies indicate that regular gratitude reduces the level of cortisol hormones (causes of stress), improves better sleep and heart health. According to the World Health Organization, the practice of gratitude can reduce the possibility of depression by 35 percent. The acceptance of gratitude culture on the workplace increases the productivity of employees. This day this day gives the message of peace and unity, especially if the world struggles with epidemic, war and environmental crises. The celebration methods are diverse. Gratitude circles are jointly held in schools and offices, where people thank each other. ‘World Gratitude Day’ reminds us that gratitude is not a feeling, but lifestyle.
