Haider Canal's 120 mld STP to increase Gomti's water quality
April 03, 2025 05:24 AM IST The Haider channel STP will increase Gomti water quality by treating 120 MLD fools, favoring 10 lakh residents and significantly reducing pollution. The Gomti will have a significant improvement in the water quality once the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) on Haider channel is fully operational. The 120 million liters per day (MLD) STP is designed to treat sewage that previously flowed directly from the Haider channel in the river, which was a major pollution of the river. Haider Canal in Lucknow (HT File Photo) The STP, located next to Lohiadet Road, has been partially operational since December 2024. It currently processes 80 MLD sewage. After Bharwara Stp of 345 MLD, Daulatganj Stp of 56 MLD, 37.5 MLD capacity, the 120mld Haider Canal STP will play an important role in keeping the Gomti clean. Authorities predicted that the plant would reach full operational capacity within the next six months. In preparation for future needs, pipes have already been laid to carry 115 MLD from wastewater to the Bharwara STP. The plant, which extends 4 hectares of land along Haider channel – from the rear gate of the zoo to the 1090 intersection – is expected to benefit a population of about 10 lakh in states such as Rajajipuram, Rajendranagar, Charbagh, Mawaiya, Alambagh, Krishnanagar and Singaragar. These areas fired sewage directly to the Haider channel, which eventually flowed into the Gomti, further affecting the quality of the water. The new STP will effectively treat this waste and lower the pollution levels in both the channel and the river. The Haider channel, built between 1814 and 1827 by the Nawab Wazir of Awadh, Ghazi-stud-Din Haider Ali, was initially built for irrigation purposes and the Gomti connected to the Ganga. However, over time, it has become a landfill for sewage. Project Manager Mahesh Kumar Gautam of Up Jal Nigam, emphasized that the Haider Canal project will have a tremendous impact to keep the Gomti clean. He pointed out that the flow of the channel can reach up to 200 MLD during the rainy season, while it generally flows at about 120 MLD. The 115 MLD distraction pipeline already in place to carry sewage to the Bharwara STP will further support the clearance efforts. The Municipal Commissioner Inderjit Singh also emphasized the importance of the Haider Canal STP for the city. He said: “Once fully operational, the facility will greatly benefit the environment, especially by improving the quality of the water in the Gomti.” However, officials say Lucknow produces about 670 MLD sewers daily, while the Haider Canal STP is fully operational, the LMC will be able to treat 579 MLD sewage and leave a deficit of nearly 100 mld per day.
