Haryana releases Yamuna water for Chhath puja canal supply suspended

Popin Panwar, Yamunanagar. Water supply from Hathnikund Barrage to the western and eastern Yamuna canals has been stopped. The reason for stopping the flow of West Yamuna canal is due to Chhath festival and the reason for stopping the supply of East Yamuna canal is due to cleaning work. The entire water from Hathnikund Barrage is released into the Yamuna River. There was a water flow of seven thousand cusecs at 18:00 on Wednesday. According to the Irrigation Department, the supply in Yamuna river will continue in the same manner till October 26. Due to water in Yamuna river there will be no problem during Chhath festival in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. The capacity of the West Yamuna canal is 17 thousand cusec and the capacity of the eastern canal is 4500 cusec. Administration and Irrigation Department have jointly increased vigilance for worship arrangements on Yamuna. After the main Arghya or Chhath festival, the supply of canals will gradually be restored. Due to cleaning work in the eastern Yamuna canal going to Uttar Pradesh, there is no demand for water for about 20 days, hence the supply is stopped. Now due to Chhath festival, the supply has also been stopped in the West Yamuna canal. At present, the evacuation of Hathni Kund Barrage is done entirely in Yamuna river, so that the devotees offering prayers at the ghats do not face any problem. – RS Mittal, Superintending Engineer, Irrigation Department, Yamunanagar. The West Yamuna Canal diverges at Hamida Head and goes to Munak Head or Karnal via Yamunanagar. Drinking water for Delhi is distributed from here. On the order of the court, 761 cusecs of water is given to Delhi. In the eastern Yamuna canal, siltation and repair work is being done in about 200 km length from Hathnikund to Shamli and Baghpat. Due to this, water from Hathnikund has been stopped at present by writing a letter to the government. -CB Yadav, Superintending Engineer, Irrigation Department, Saharanpur Before the supply of canal was stopped, 352 cubic meters of water flowed in the Yamuna river. However, that water continues to rise and fall every hour. The Eastern Yamuna Canal provides irrigation to the districts of Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Meerut, Ghaziabad and Delhi of Uttar Pradesh from Hathnikund Barrage. Every year proposals are sent to the Superintending Engineer to close the channel from our level of upper and lower section for silt cleaning. This year too, proposals were sent for cleaning the silt from the canal, on which instructions were given from the level of Superintendent Engineer to close the canal. Cleaning work of the same silt is in progress.- Praveen Joshia, Executive Engineer, East Yamuna Canal Upper Section, Saharanpur.
