Jayant Patil, president of Maharashtra, NCP (SP), made it clear Tuesday that he did not resign from the post after putting down in the presence of Party Head Sharad Pawar. “I did not resign,” Jayant Patil said when asked about reports that indicate he could possibly retire. Earlier in the day, Jayant Patil’s remark during an event held at the Balgandharva Auditorium in Pune on the 26th Foundation Day of the Nationalist Congress, which caused an emotional response from workers who spurred him on. It is important for the party to give new faces a chance, Patil said. “Pawar Saheb gave me many opportunities. I have entrusted the responsibility for seven years, but now it is important that the party gives a chance for new faces,” Patil said, causing a strong response from some workers who opposed his decision. In the midst of their emotional attraction, Patil, in a voice choking from emotions, asked the workers to calm down. “This party belongs to Pawar Saheb, which is why it has to make an appropriate decision. We all have a long journey ahead. I thank Pawar Saheb and all the party workers,” Patil said, ending his speech while Pawar was watching. The NCP, founded by Sharad Pawar, split in July 2023 after joining cousin Ajit Pawar with the then Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government. The party’s name and its clock symbol was given to the Ajit Pawar faction, while the one under the leadership of former Union Minister NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) was baptized.
