IANS, New Delhi. The African Swine Fever (AFS) showed its havoc in Mizoram in the month of March and so far 1050 pigs have died. Giving information, an official of the State Animal Husbandry and Medical Department (AHVD) said that so far 34 areas of three districts have been declared ASF infected zones.

International and state border adjoining areasThe three districts of Mizoram, which have been declared AFS infected, are Lailedlai, Mamit and Siaha. The border of Longlai district is bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, Mmed district shares the boundary with Tripura and Bangladesh and Siyaha’s border is from Myanmar.

Many teams of the State Animal Husbandry and Medical Department have killed more than 400 pigs and its children in these districts so far. The new outbreak of the African swine fever was confirmed on 20 March through a test at the North-East Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Guwahati.
Outbreak took place in MarchOfficials of the State Animal Husbandry and Medical Department said that the new outbreak of ASF was confirmed in Longalai district earlier in March. The state government is closely monitoring the situation. Government gave compensationAn official of the State Animal Husbandry and Medical Department said that Mizram suffered a loss of Rs 334.14 crore in 2021, Rs 210.32 crore in 2022 and Rs 15.77 crore in 2023, keeping in mind the killing of pigs and boar children due to ASF outbreak. After this, the government compensated hundreds of families for the loss of pigs.
How dangerous is for humans?African swine fever is not dangerous for humans at the moment because it does not attack Human. It is a dangerous disease spreading in pigs and wild pigs and it is also fatal for them.However, this disease can affect humans in an indirect manner, such as damage to the boar rearing industry, lack of meat and economic losses. It is advisable to stay away from human infected animals.
