Mumbai Weather, Travel Update: Monsoon Mayhem causes landslide, weakening; IMD issues red alert for heavy rain
Mumbai residents woke up on heavy rain on Saturday morning. A red warning for heavy rains in Mumbai and Ragaid was issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on August 16. Several airlines and Western Railway have issued an update for passengers. The travel advice issued by the airlines, in a post on X, said: “Travel advice. Plan ahead, #Mumbai Travelers! Spicejet in a post on X said: “#Weatherupdate: Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai (bomb), all departure/arrivals and their resulting flights can be affected. Passengers are requested to keep an investigation into their flight status via http://picejet.com/#status.” Western Railway also dropped an update at 09:30 and informed that all trains were running normally, despite IMD’s reading warning for Mumbai City and suburbs. Mumbai’s Vikhroli who witnessed landslide after heavy rain and the rainfall of 257.5 mm, the highest in the city in the 24-hour period before 08:30 of August 16. In the landslide, 2 people were reported dead while 2 others were injured. Santacruz occupied second place with 244.7 mm of rain during the same period. IMD issued a close warning for Maharashtra and Gujarat and until 11:00 am. The weather agency warned against ‘Intense Rain Sponsors’ in Ratnagiri, Raigad, Mumbai City, Mumbai Servent, Thane and Palghar districts amid the presence of intense to very intense convection over the city and adjacent area. Visuals from Kings Circle, Dadar Railway Station, Vashi and several other places show roads and streets weaken. The weather forecast for Mumbai is valid until 8:30 am. From August 17, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places with exceptionally heavy rainfall in isolated place.” The maximum temperature in the financial capital is expected to settle around 28 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will hang about 24 degrees Celsius on Saturday 16 August. An orange warning is in place for Thane, Ratnagiri, Pune and Satara for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
