CinemaCon brings Tom Cruise’s living manifestation of destiny, IMF agent Ethan Hunt, back for his final reckoning. The upcoming action sequel Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning finds Cruise back in the lead (and running to save the world), with director Christopher McQuarrie taking the reins once again for what’s been promised as a “satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc.”
Tom Cruise was in attendance at CinemaCon to show off a new trailer for The Final Reckoning, and it sounds absolutely bonkers. Check out the footage description, courtesy of ScreenRant.
“The teaser opens with Hunt clinging to the side of a small-engine plane, with snippets from previous movies then flashing across the screen. This includes his CIA vault heist from the original movie, but also the Kremlin bombing from Ghost Protocol and Hunt’s gassing of intelligence community leaders in Dead Reckoning.
The trailer then cuts to Hunt being arrested by the military, presumably to work for them, with Gabriel voiceover taunting: ‘Your team has betrayed you. All of your secrets, compromised.’ Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) then says, ‘Everything you are. Everything you’ve done has come to this.’ The trailer shows Hunt and his team getting an aircraft carrier to accomplish their mission before footage plays of Cruise clinging to the side of a plane, jumping into the ocean, and trying to survive underwater. The trailer ends with Hunt saying to his team, ‘I need you to trust me one last time.’
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen, the eighth Mission: Impossible movie stars Cruise alongside Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Hayley Atwell as Grace, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, as well as Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, Rolf Saxon, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Frederick Schmidt, Mark Gatiss, Charles Parnell, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, Lucy Tulugarjuk, Katy O’Brian, Tramell Tillman, and Stephen Oyoung.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning finds Cruise back as Ethan Hunt, who must learn that our lives are the sum of our choices as he continues to fight to save us all from the rogue AI known as “The Entity” that was introduced in 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Left Tom Cruise Gasping for Air
Christopher McQuarrie took the reins of the Mission: Impossible franchise with the fifth installment, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, back in 2015. Since then, each movie has been better than the last, with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning being met with rave reviews, and now standing at a hugely impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. With this in mind, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning certainly has a lot to live up to when it lands in theaters in the United States on May 23, 2025, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. While we await to see whether The Final Reckoning does indeed reach loftier heights than its already pretty lofty predecessors, returning star Ving Rhames has revealed exclusively to MovieWeb that the sequel is by far the most emotional.
“I would say it is very emotional. And it really shows a lot about the relationship between Tom and I.”
Alongside the emotion, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will also bring the death-defying stunts, with Cruise not only hanging from a plane at one point, but also nearly drowning. “I’m breathing in my own carbon dioxide. It builds up in the body and affects the muscles. You have to overcome all of that while you’re doing it, and be present,” Tom Cruise said of this particular stunt, which finds Ethan Hunt getting close to “The Entity” and exploring the wreckage of the Sevastopol submarine from the previous movie.
