Bihar man under 5 dead to the bus with 54 people from the Niagara Falls in New York
At least five people, including an Indian citizen, were reportedly killed and dozens of others injured when a tour bus to New York City returned from a trip to Niagara Falls, on a highway outside Buffalo. The bus returned to New York after visiting Niagara Falls, with 54 people on board, including two bus companies, police said. Most of the passengers were Indian, Chinese or Philippines, New York State Police James O’Callaghan said during a press briefing. The deceased was identified as Bihar’s Shankar Kumar Jha, 65; Pinki Changrani, 60, of East Brunswick, New Jersey; Xie Hongzhuo, 22, of Beijing, China; Zhang Xiaolan, 55, of Jersey City, New Jersey; and Jian Mingli, 56, of Jersey City, New Jersey, reports ABC News. According to New York State Police, the deadly accident on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, near Buffalo, took place at 12.22 hours (local time). New York Tropper James O’Callaghan was quoted by ABC News and said during a press briefing that the bus was driving east when the ‘vehicle lost control, went into the median, too much corrected and ended up in the ditch.’ State police said on Saturday that the bus overturned and rolled the I-90 on the South Wal. The accident forced the closure of the Thruway in both directions. The eastern jobs, which were closed in the evening, were reopened around 8.30am, about eight hours after the accident, and the western jobs reopened just after 5pm, reports the Buffalo News. Several people were shot out or thrown around the bus when it overturned, according to New York State Police Commander, Maj. Andre Ray. Ray said five people were pronounced dead at the scene while many were still hospitalized. However, there were no other patients in a “life -threatening status”, he added. Ray said the bus, which is passengers of 1 to 74 years old, by M&Y Tour Inc. operated. It was initially suspected that a child was one of the deaths, but it was later determined that he was false, Ray said. Investigators have excluded the driver of mechanical failure and weakening or intoxication as causes of the accident, Buffalo News reports. Trooper O’Callaghan said that every passenger in the bus had at least a kind of “cut, bruises or barn as an injury”. He said the bus was ‘extremely damaged’ and that many passengers were shot out of the vehicle when it crashed. The driver was ‘alive and good’, he added. New York governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement posted on X that she was “informed about the tragic tour bus accident” and that her office “carefully” coordinated with the state police and other agencies responding to the accident.
