A poll of Brits has uncovered the top 25 telltale signs that a person has some serious “girders” as IRN-BRU relaunches its famous slogan from the 1990s
IRN-BRU’s famous ‘Made in Scotland from Girders’ slogan, which hasn’t been seen since the 90s, has returned in an effort to encourage people to be themselves and find their inner gumption. The drinks brand has launched a new TV advert featuring a plucky performance from a 13 year old Glasgow lad who’s never performed before, highlighting ‘bravery’.
According to a survey of 2,000 adults telling your boss they’re wrong, expressing your true feelings to someone and even skinny dipping are signs of modern day bravery. A third believe cold-water swimming is a sign of heroism, while 15 percent think wearing skimpy swimwear to the beach without shame shows maverick courage.
Interestingly, three quarters of Brits wish they were braver, with 34 percent admitting to doing something daring less than once a year, if at all. The research showed there were five percent who have never managed to do something that scares them.
Kenny Nicholson, a spokesperson for the brand, said: “Having the girders to go make something happen, or just be yourself, is something we should all be able to tap into. And the results of the survey show that most of us really want to unlock that inner, unapologetic courage.”
“Whether that’s telling a manager they’re wrong about something or simply picking up the phone to call rather than text, the idea of being ‘Made from Girders’ is about inner strength and being able to steel your way through life, whether what we face is big or small, serious or silly.”
This shortage of boldness might explain why half the nation with a bucket list worry they’ll never tick everything off. Just 25 percent reckon they’ll muster the guts to fulfill their personal dreams during their lifetime.
Almost half of Brits wish they had the bottle to sport clothing they regard as ‘outlandish’. Even routine tasks – such as calling someone instead of texting or seeking directions from a complete stranger are considered courageous nowadays.
More than four in 10 also confessed they wouldn’t have the nerve to attempt stand-up comedy in a million years. While 44 percent would turn down the opportunity to be on reality television.
However, three in 10 admitted they’d probably do something daring if it might result in an amusing anecdote.
Kenny Nicholson added: “Facing your fears or taking on a new challenge. Whether it’s really belting out your favorite karaoke song or even summoning the courage to tell someone you love them, can have a truly profound effect on your life and how you choose to live it.
“If there’s no guts, there’s no glory – that’s why it’s worthwhile digging deep and finding those girders.”
