Paris (AP) – a lifelong fan of ‘Tomb Raider’, French gamer Romain Bos was on Tenterhooks when an update of the popular video game was online in August. But his excitement quickly became anger. The gamer’s ears and that of other “tomb raider” fans-something wrong with the French language of Lara Croft, the game’s protagonist. It even sounded robot, lifeless even – the warmth, grace and credibility that Françoise Cadol, the French voice actor, gave Croft since she started playing the character in 1996. Gamers and Cadol themselves came to the same conclusion: A machine cloned her voice and replaced her. “It’s pathetic,” said Cadol, who immediately called her lawyer. “My voice belongs to me. You have no right to do that. ‘ “It was absolutely scandalous,” says Bos. “It was artificial intelligence.” Aspyr, the game developer in Austin, Texas, did not respond to email questions from the Associated Press. But last week, it admitted in a post on his website that what it described as ‘unauthorized AI -generated content’ was recorded in the August 14 update of “Tomb Raider IV -Vi Remastered” that made fans angry. “We addressed this issue by removing all AI voting,” Aspyr’s post said. “We apologize for the inconvenience it caused.” Still, the case has caused alarms in the Voice -Over community, with champions saying it is a sober example of dangers that AI poses to human workers and their work. “If we can replace actors, we will be able to replace accountants, and a whole series of other professions that can also be automated,” says Patrick Kuban, a French language actor who is also a co-president of United Voice Artists, an international federation of Voice Over artists. “So we have to ask ourselves the right questions: How far should we go, and how do we regulate these machines?” Hollywood has seen similar concerns, with video play artists for 11 months for a new contract that includes AI grapen this year. “It happens everywhere. We get warnings from all over the world – from Brazil to Taiwan,” Kuban said in an Associated Press interview. “The voices of actors are captured, or to create vocal clones – not perfect – but for illegal use on social media by individuals, because there are now many programs to make sound deep subjects,” Kuban said. “These votes are also used by content producers who are not necessarily in the same country,” he said. “So it is very difficult for actors to regain control of their votes, to block these practices.” Cadol says her phone begins to erupt with messages, e -mails and notices on social media of upset fans within minutes of releasing the “Tomb Raider” update. “I looked and saw all these emotions – anger, sadness, confusion. And that’s how I found out that my voice was cloned, ‘she said in an AP interview. Cadol says 12 years of recording French language for Lara Croft-from 1996 to 2008, an intimate bond with her fans. She calls them the ‘guardians’ of her work. After the initial shock subsided, she decided to fight back. Her lawyer in Paris, Jonathan Elkaim, apologizes to Aspyr and financial correction. In the update, new pieces of Voice -Over seem to have been added to sincere recordings that Cadol says she made years ago. Most importantly, fans have picked up a special segment. In it, a voice players instruct how to use their game controllers to get Lara Croft on a hindrance and start in French: ‘Place toi devant et Appuyez Sur Avancer’ – stand in front and press ‘advance’. Not only does it sound cluttered, but it also reads as grammatically wrong with French speakers – to mix the polite and less polite language forms they use, depending on who they address. Gamers were in the arms. Bos posted a video on his YouTube channel that night and mourned: “It’s half Françoise Cadol, half ai. It’s horrible! Why did they do it?” “I was really disgusted,” the 34-year-old said in an AP interview. “I grew up with Françoise Cadol’s voice. I’ve been a ‘Tomb Raider’ fan since I was a young child. ” Lara Croft is a bit – how should I say – sometimes a little sarcastic in some of her lines. And I think Françoise played it very well, ‘he said. “That’s exactly why now is the time to set boundaries,” he added. “It is true that future generations also have the chance to experience talented actors.”
