Transfats found in processed foods, bakeries and hydrogenated vegetable oils can also increase bad cholesterol. To avoid problems caused by bad cholesterol, unsaturated fats must be replaced with saturated fats. Unsaturated fats can help reduce cholesterol. There are also two types of unsaturated fats: mono -saturated and poly -saturated fats. Both maintain the amount of good cholesterol in the body and reduce bad cholesterol.
