Jakarta DPRD leaders support Gubernatorial regulation banning the consumption of dog and cat meat

Jakarta – DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung will prepare a gubernatorial regulation (pergub) banning the consumption and trade of dog and cat meat in the capital. The chairman of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Khoirudin, supports the pergup. Strongly agree that there is a planned gubernatorial regulation in question,” Khoirudin said when asked on Thursday (16/10/2025). PAGE UP TO CONTINUE CONTENT The Vice Chair of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Rani Mauliani, also expressed the same thing. As a Muslim who does not eat dog meat, he naturally supports the governor’s plan. “Of course (I) appreciate this regulation because it gives us Making Muslims in DKI feel more secure when they buy animal meat for consumption,” explains Rani. He suspects that there is still a practice of trading dog and cat meat in Jakarta which is carried out by certain groups. Even so, he did not specifically mention the dog-cat meat trade. “In my opinion, these two animals are pets that are usually close to us and our family in their daily life. So it’s best to just be family friends, not to be consumed. Because they are cute, you can’t bear to eat them,” he continued. This policy is known to have been conveyed by Pramono Anung after he received an audience with the Dog Meat Free Indonesia Coalition (DMFI) at Jakarta City Hall. Pramono immediately instructed the relevant officials to prepare derivative regulations. “There is a request for a governor’s regulation regarding dog meat. So dog meat may not be eaten in Jakarta. In principle, I agree,” Pramono said at the Jakarta City Hall on Monday (13/10). He added that the preparation of the gubernatorial regulation aims to be completed within one month. Apart from the gubernatorial regulation, Pramono offers the opportunity to form regional regulations (perda) if necessary. He said it will be discussed with the DKI DPRD, including with councilors concerned about animal protection issues. (isa/yangs)
