Jammu and Kashmir Rajya Sabha Elections: Congress announces support to National Conference

Srinagar, October 24 (IANS). All Congress members from Jammu and Kashmir will support National Conference (NC) candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections. Voting for Rajya Sabha elections will be held on Friday. This decision was taken after the meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) held in Srinagar late on Thursday evening. By announcing its decision to support the NC, the Congress reaffirmed its political alliance with the party. Senior Congress leader and JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra announced that all six Congress MPs will vote in favor of NC candidates. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Karra stressed that defeating the BJP is the top priority of the Congress-NC alliance. He said that our alliance with the National Conference is strong and principled. Our aim is to ensure that the BJP faces defeat in these elections. The Rajya Sabha elections will test the strength of alliances and could expose any rifts in the parties. Both sides prepare for the decisive day; Now all eyes are on the figures. NC has fielded four candidates: Mohammad Razwan Chaudhary, Sajad Kitchlu, Shami Oberoi and Imran Nabi Dar. At the same time, BJP fielded three candidates for three seats. For the fourth seat, BJP has fielded its Union Territory unit president Sat Sharma. The NC has an edge over its rivals on three seats, while the BJP has an edge over the NC alliance on the fourth seat, with 28 votes against the NC’s 24 votes. PDP announced support to National Conference on the third seat. All elected MPs of the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly are eligible to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections. These elections are being held after almost 10 years and these elections could not be held after February 2021 because there was no active assembly in Jammu and Kashmir. –IANS PSK Share this story Tags
