Jason Marsden Talks Max and Roxanne’s ‘A Goofy Movie’ Kissing Scene – ryan

Jason Marsden has many memories from the making of A Goofy Movie.

Marsden is among the voice actors from the 1995 Disney cult classic that appears in a new documentary, Not Just a Gooflooking back at the making of A Goofy Movie.

In the documentary, Marsden recalls filming the kiss between Max and his sweetheart, Roxanne.

“We’re recording the scene where Max and Roxanne have the smooch with (casting director) Jamie Thomason. And I remember him saying, I’ll never forget this. He’s, like, ‘All right. We’re all adults here. Kellie, do you mind coming over to Jason’s mic and maybe do try a couple of takes just kissing for real and and reacting that way?’ ”

Marsden, 50, continued, “And I’m like, ‘Yes,’ and remember feeling very excited and terrified. And I think that really, it definitely helped the scene because it was exactly what it was, you know? It’s probably one of the takes that they used.”

A Goofy Movie debuted on April 7, 1995, grossing just $37.6 million against its $18 million in production costs.

The release came five months after its originally intended release date, further illustrating it as a low-priority release among the rich Disney roster of the time. While it wasn’t a commercial hit, love for the film grew after its VHS release (in part fueled by Tevin Campbell’s super-catchy theme song, “I2i”).

The new documentary follows a young creative team tackling their first Disney feature, facing disappointment upon release, only for the film to gain a passionate following decades later. Through key interviews and rare archival footage, it explores the struggles, victories and studio dynamics that shaped what’s arguably Disney’s first cult classic.

Speaking with PEOPLE about Not Just a GoofGoofy voice actor Bill Farmer spoke on his relationship with Marsden after their time playing father and son.

“Jason has been a friend since that time, almost like a second son,” Farmer, 72, told PEOPLE.

“I think it kind of confused my son, who was about 5 years old at the time. People would say, ‘Is Jason your brother? Your brother is Max and your dad is Goofy,’ and he’d go, ‘I didn’t think I had a brother.’ He didn’t quite understand it at the time.”

Not Just a Goof is now streaming on Disney+, as is A Goofy Movie.
