Good news for Wheel watchers and Jeopardy! junkies: You’ll no longer need to steal your parents’ cable login to legally watch new episodes of the long-running game-show franchises. Starting this fall, first-run installments of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! will stream on Peacock and Hulu (or Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers) the day after they air on local TV stations across the country. It’s the first time current-season episodes of the Sony Pictures Television–produced syndicated shows will be available on major streaming platforms. (ABC’s primetime spinoffs of the two shows have long streamed next-day on Hulu.) In addition, Sony has also licensed a library of older episodes of the two shows to both streamers.
The news of the deal comes as Sony and CBS Media Ventures remain locked in a bitter court fight over who gets to distribute these syndicated episodes to local TV stations. But Sony has handled streaming distribution of the shows before, including licensing older seasons to multiple platforms, so in theory, there shouldn’t be an issue here, at least as Sony likely sees things. We’ll see if CBS agrees. Wheel begins its 43rd season in September, while Jeopardy will be headed into its 42nd season in its current incarnation.
