Kacie & Patrick Prove The Love Is Blind Experiment Doesn’t Work

The first batch of Love Is Blind season 9 episodes ended with a brutal breakup before the couples even made it to Mexico, and the cringy moment revealed an uncomfortable truth about the Netflix social experiment. Love Is Blind first premiered on Netflix in February 2020, a fitting precursor to the various stay-at-home orders of the pandemic. The show was an instant hit, and has now been renewed through season 10.

Every season of Love Is Blind begins with Nick and Vanessa Lachey asking, “Is love truly blind?” The cast members then bare their souls on camera in an attempt to fall in love and get engaged to someone they’ve never seen before. However, the longer the show goes on and the more seasons that air, the more definitively the show is proving its own fatal flaw.

Kacie McIntosh and Patrick Suzuki agreed to marry in the pods, but their romance was short-lived. Kacie’s reaction to meeting Patrick definitely answers Love Is Blind season 9’s central question, but that’s not a positive thing.

Kacie Broke Up With Patrick Due To Attraction

The Love Is Blind fiancé reveals are always cringe-inducingand for good reason. These people have spent about ten days building an emotional connection with a disembodied voice, and it takes time to match the voice with someone’s face. As the show purposely does not include music during these moments, the scenes are even more awkward.

Kacie and Patrick’s first meeting was particularly uncomfortable. While many couples seem excited at finally seeing their finances, Kacie and Patrick were both low energy. Later, Patrick raved about Kacie in a confessional, but Kacie couldn’t muster the same enthusiasm. Instead, she described the feeling as well “overwhelming,” choosing to stare at her new engagement ring rather than express any true emotions.

By the end of episode 5, audiences knew something was up with Kacie and Patrick, as she requested to meet with Patrick at the hotel before they were set to fly to Mexico. The last time such a meeting happened was on Love Is Blind season 8, when Taylor Haag suspected Daniel Hastings followed her on Instagram before filming the show, compromising the experiment.

Taylor and Daniel’s hotel meeting had a much happier ending than Kacie and Patrick’s, as Taylor determined Daniel had never followed her on the social media platform. Kacie, on the other hand, called her hotel meeting not to get answers, but to quit the show.

This interaction was even more awkward than the couple’s first meeting. Kacie caught trying to kiss and touch Patrick, promising him it wasn’t about appearance. Later, the audience learned the truth: Kacie wasn’t attracted to her fiancé.

In a clip from moments before the breakup, Kacie explicitly said, “I just, unfortunately, don’t think that my attraction to him is gonna grow.” Kacie may have loved her connection with Patrick in the pods, but she proved love is not, in fact, blind, when she couldn’t look past his appearance and move forward with the experiment.

There’s More To A Relationship Than Personality

Kacie may look like the season’s villain for dumping a man due to his appearance, but she exposed Love Is Blind‘s fatal flaw: there is more to relationships than an emotional connectionand it’s okay to want to be attracted to your partner. Kacie even addressed this before the breakup, saying, “He’s not a bad-looking guy in any sense, but he deserves somebody that’s so obsessed with him,” adding that she wasn’t that person.

Many Love Is Blind couples break up before the weddingor say “no” at the altar in front of their loved ones, and there are various reasons for this. Season 4’s Clay Gravesande, for example, elected not to marry AD Smith because he wasn’t sure how to be a good husband and needed more time before making that commitment.

It makes sense that Kacie, or anyone, would want to be attracted to the person she was going to marry, but the fact that she wasn’t attracted to Patrick despite their emotional connection proves the answer to Love Is Blind‘s central question. Love isn’t blindat least not in this context.

Love Is Blind’s Success Rate Is Dwindling

Love Is Blind may have more married couples than The Bachelor, but the show is becoming less successful on that front with each passing season. At least one couple has gotten married from every season of Love Is Blindbut of the fourteen married couples, five have since gotten divorced.

Clearly, there’s more to a lasting relationship than an initial ten-day emotional connection. If marriage was that simple, all of these couples would still be together. Sure, maybe these couples are truly falling in love with each other’s personalities, but love alone clearly cannot sustain a relationship with differing values, desires, or expectations.

Love Is Blind should absolutely continue to make new seasons; it’s an extremely entertaining show, and some people will find genuine love. However, there should be an understanding that the show’s premise isn’t true. Kacie and Patrick are proof of that.
