Kolkata rape case: Western Bengals are the safest state for women, says TMC leader; Slams Dharmendra Pradhan for the target of Govt | Today news

Former Trinamol Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh, in a sharp rebuttal, declared Kolkata as the ‘safest state’ in India and urged Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to address crimes in BJP government areas such as Unnao, Hathras, PrayAgra and Delhi. Ghosh’s remarks come following the Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan, who expressed anger over the alleged gang rape of a legal student in a South Kolkata college. Pradhan argued that despite Kolkata’s rich legacy in women’s education institutions such as ‘RG Kar Medical College and South Calcutta Law College’-the state saw an ‘increase in horrific crimes’, including the gang’s rape of the student. “Tell Dharmendra Pradhan to talk about crimes against women in places such as Unnao, Hathras, Prayagraj and Delhi. Police are in Western Beans. Pradhan claimed that the attackers were ‘Goons associated with the ruling TMC’ and warned that the silence of the government reflected a ‘very dangerous mindset in a republic’. Pradhan called the TMC a modern expansion of the ‘old congressional culture’, and demanded decisive political actions: ‘They must be thrown out – only then will peace return to Bengal.’ “What can be done if friend friend rapes?” Senior Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks on the alleged rape case on Friday drew massive flames, causing further political confrontation between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP. In response to the Kolkata gang rape case, Banerjee said: ‘What can be done if a friend rapes his friend?’ The BJP described its remarks as ‘disgraceful’. “What can be done if a friend rapes his friend? Will the police be in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (the victim)? ‘ Banerjee asked, adding, ‘Who is doing all this delinquency and molestation? Some men do it. So, who should fight women? Women should fight against these perverse men. ‘ The allegations of the victim according to the police’s complaint filed by the survivor were a law student in a waiting room next to the student association’s office, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted by three men. The accused was identified as Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student and practicing penalty advocate, along with two current student-Sib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20). The survivor claims that she was forcibly restricted in the room, where Mishra sexually assaulted her while the other two assisted and assisted. In her statement, she says she was hit with a hockey stick, denied access to an inhaler during a panic attack, and threatened with death if she dared to speak out. A medical examination has confirmed her account, with doctors documenting signs of physical assault, including bite marks, scratches and evidence corresponding to forced penetration. All three accused were arrested and detained for four days as the investigation continued.
