Ladakh social activist Gitanjali Angmo filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, alleging surveillance
New Delhi, October 23 (IANS). Gitanjali Angmo, wife of noted social activist Sonam Wangchuk of Ladakh, filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court. He alleged that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) is constantly monitoring him, thus violating his personal freedom and fundamental rights. Geetanjali said in her complaint that when she met her husband in Jodhpur, the Rajasthan Police and IB followed her. The authorities kept her under close surveillance during her trip and meeting with her husband. He claimed that he was being monitored since his press conference in Delhi in September. No matter where they go, officials follow them, thereby violating their privacy. Geetanjali told that on October 7 and 11, when she reached the Jodhpur airport to meet her husband, the police took her straight into the vehicle. During the meeting with Wangchuk in the jail, DCP Manglesh and a lady constable were present there, who took notes of their conversation. He said that in Jodhpur he is not allowed to go anywhere else or meet anyone else, which is a violation of his rights. Geetanjali says that this police surveillance is a violation of her constitutional rights. As a citizen she has full right to meet her husband and go to Jodhpur without any restriction. Also, under the right to privacy, no one else has the right to listen to the conversation between him and Wangchuk. He said that this action of the police is a violation of article 19 (freedom of expression) and article 21 (right to life and privacy) of the Constitution. Geetanjali demanded the Supreme Court to immediately stop this surveillance and protect her rights. The next hearing date of the case is awaited. Meanwhile, there has been no official statement from the government and police. –IANS SHK/GKT Share this story Tags
