Lord Meghnad Desai, a member of the British Parliament and an Indian origin economist, died at the age of 84. He studied topics such as the Marxist economy political economy -monetary policy and economic history. Desai was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civil honor in 2008. Lord Meghnad Desai, an economist of Indian origin and member of the House of Lords, a member of the Upper House of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, died Tuesday (July 29, 2025). He was 84 years old. Meghnad Jagdishchandra Desai was born in 1940 in a middle -class family in Vadodara. He grew up in India with his two brothers and a sister. He allegedly passed the matriculation investigation at the age of 14 and subsequently obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Ramnarayan Ruia College, associated with the University of Mumbai. He then obtained a postgraduate degree in this subject from the Department of Economics, University of Mumbai. He sought new educational challenges and for this purpose he received a scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania in 1960, where he completed his PhD in economics after three years. Many studies written about Indian economic reforms were students of Desai Marxist economy, political economy, monetary policy and economic history. His research has been on various subjects for five decades, including the influence of the private sector and the state on development and Marxist economy. He also wrote several studies on Indian economic reforms and investigated the effects of globalization and liberalization. Desai erected the Global Governance Study Center at the London School of Economics (LSE), which is the LSE development study program and was one of the creators of the human development index. Desai, a member of the British Labor Party, wrote that his political energy and ideas participated in student protests worldwide in 1968-1969. Desai became an active member of the British Labor Party, where he worked as chairman from 1986 to 1992. In 1991 he was appointed as a member of the Labor Party at the House of Lords. In the last years of his presidential post, Desai was appointed a lifelong colleague as Baron Desai of St. Clement Danes in Westminster City on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. After almost five decades of engagement, he left the Labor Party in 2020 with reference to anti-Jewish spirit. Padma Bhushan, found in 2008, was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civil honor in 2008. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the death of Desai. PM on X said PM Modi: ‘I’m anxious about the downfall of prestigious thinkers, writer and economist Shri Meghnad Desai. The prime minister also said he would remember the conversation with Desai, where he shared his valuable views.
