Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass considers Curfews to escalate as protests | Today news

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on Tuesday (June 10) that her office was working with the LAPD to consider curfews and other precautions amid the potential for renewed turmoil after a few days of protests caused by federal immigration attacks, ABC News reports. “There were a few looting on Monday night, but the protests were much smaller and less violent than the weekend,” Bass said at a press conference. “We carefully monitor the situation, and there is a possibility of one event later today.” Bass was clear to distinguish between peaceful protesters and violent rioters. She emphasized that the unrest is limited to just a few blocks in the city center. “It’s not the entire center, and it’s not the whole city,” the mayor said, counteracting the national media portrayals of widespread chaos. The mayor said she believes that most protesters are really concerned about immigrant rights, while those responsible for vandalism and looting ‘have another agenda’. “I want to tell him to stop the raids,” Bass revealed the plans to call President Donald Trump directly, who deployed 4,000 national troops and 700 marines to Los Angeles following the protests. The mayor criticized the decision, which reflected by Governor Gavin Newsom, who was pronounced by the California Governor. “I want to tell him to stop the raids,” Bass said. “I want to tell him it’s a city of immigrants.” She added that the raids, who started on Friday, left many families “terrified” and are afraid to go to school or work. Trump defends troop deployment President Trump, who spoke of the Oval Office, justified the military response by calling the situation a ‘violent occupation’. “LA will burn at the moment, if not for the deployments,” Trump said, demanding that waiting troops remain until the threat is fully offset. Trump has also left the possibility of calling on the rebellion law – a rarely used legal mechanism that would enable the military to tackle law enforcement duties. “If there is a rebellion, I would definitely call it,” he said. “We’ll see.” Bass: National guard who does not stop violence, despite Trump’s claims, is questioning Mayor Bass the effectiveness of the troop deployments. “The national guard doesn’t stop the violence,” she said. “Their one task is to guard the federal building in the city center and another in Westwood.” When asked what the incoming Marines would instruct, she replied, “I have no idea.” Police are making over 180 arrests from Tuesday morning, Los Angeles police have reported more than 180 arrests since Saturday. Complaints ranged from looting and assaulting officers to attempted murder using a Molotov -cocktail. On Monday alone, more than 100 people were arrested, including 14 for looting. Police have confirmed that they are responding to some protester, including rock throwing and highway blockcades, with flash grenades, tear gas and pepper balls. Los Angeles, a city that continues with protests and the potential for further escalation, remains on a major warning. But Mayor Bass repeated her administration’s focus on de-escalation and community safety.
