Netflix reveals 'Kurukshetra', the first Indian mythological anime that tells the Mahabharata with a daring new vision
Netflix India is making his first attempt at animated Indian mythology with ‘Kurukshetra’, an ambitious new series that re -encompasses the Mahabharata for a modern audience. ‘Kurukshetra’ – Netflix India’s debut in the world of animation based on Mahabharata, which on October 10, Première, ‘Kurukshetra’ is an important step in Netflix’s expanding original content and reflects a growing interest in culturally rooted storytelling with contemporary attraction. Conceptualized and created by Anu Sikka, and produced by Tipping Point, Kurukshetra brings together an impressive creative team: Alok Jain, Anu Sikka and Ajit Andhare serve as producers, while Ujaan Ganguly takes on the roles of author and director. In a special addition, legendary poet and lyricist Gulzar joins the project as his official lyricist, adding the lyrical wealth and emotional weight to the narrative. What is ‘Kurukshetra’ about? Unlike traditional retelling, ‘Kurukshetra’ offers the Mahabharata through a unique lens. From the points of view of 18 central warriors, the story dives deep into the inner struggle, moral dilemmas and emotional toll of a war that has changed the course of Indian mythology. The show was released in two parts over the 18 days of the fight, with nine episodes in each. Tanya Bami, series head at Netflix India, shared the vision of the platform, “Kurukshetra is the first mythological anime of Netflix India and a truly new approach of the Mahabharata. With its distinctive storytelling lens, layered characters, and a moving background, this series is a story that is a way that is in a way today. Creator Anu Sikka added her own perspective to the depth and intention of the project: ‘The Battle of Kurukshetra is memorable and timeless – it is a clash of duty, destiny and moral choices. Through this animated series, we examine the 18 days of Kurukshetra with its clear perspectives that tell the ever -timeless wisdom with the power of visual story. ‘ With this release, Netflix not only expands its genre offers, but also introduces Indian audiences to a format that has long been internationally successful: animated storytelling rooted in mythology. ‘Kurukshetra’ is expected to echo with both older fans of the Mahabharata and younger viewers who discover it for the first time. The series premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 10, 2025.
