Meghalaya: Preparing for special review of the voters list, the number of polling stations has increased

Shillong, October 7 (IANS). Meghalaya Chief Election Officer (CEO) Dr. BDR Tiwari provided information on different schemes of the India Electoral Commission (ECI) in Shillong. He particularly explained about the preparations for the upcoming special intensive review (SIR) of voter lists. Dr. BDR Tiwari, while talking to Ians, said that the sir practice recently completed in Bihar will now be implemented across the country. A conference of CEOs of all states was arranged in New -Delhi on September 10 to review and lead the readiness of the states in this regard. He informed that the voter list of 2025 in PDF format is available on the official website of Meghalaya, CEO, where individual voters can see online. Dr. Tiwari has issued the documents acceptable to voter verification under Sir, and the government has issued identity cards, educational and birth certificates, accommodation certificates and cabinets certificates. He also informed that Aadhaar card was included as the 12th valid document for identity verification according to the September 8 High Court order. According to the Aadhaar Act 2026, it should only be used as proof of identity and not as evidence of citizenship. Dr. Tiwari told that all polling stations were revised with more than 1,200 voters. 27 polling stations were identified in Meghalaya. At the same time, to facilitate the access of voters in remote areas, 49 new polling stations were approved and 12 polling stations were merged. After these changes, the total number of polling stations in the state now stands at 3.615. In addition, the Electoral Commission has approved the appointment of 35 new assistant election registration officials (EROS), including five new Aero posts. With these appointments, there are now a total of 126 eros in 60 meetings of Meghalaya.
