Mexico is considering setting up customs duties on China and other countries without a trade agreement
Mexico president Claudia Shinbom said at her press conference on Thursday morning that her country is considering setting up new customs duties on countries with which they do not have a commercial agreement, including China. The new drawings are under the so -called ‘Mexico Plan’, a national program aimed at improving local industry and industrial development. “We are studying customs duties within the Mexico plan that we have proposed since we adopted power,” Shinbom said. She added that China is among the countries that do not link it to a commercial agreement to Mexico, “but that is not the only one.” Shenbum added that the sectors that will be affected by the new fees will be announced on time, without specifying the rate of fees or the date of additional details. Bloomberg said last week that the Mexican government is planning to increase customs duties on some Asian countries, including China, as part of the 2026 budget proposal to be offered this month. Additional fees- which include a wide range of products such as cars, textiles and plastic, are aimed at protecting national businesses from cheap imports. The Administration of President Claudia Shinbom is scheduled to send a draft proposal within the public budget project by September 8 to Congress.
