Jakarta – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) revealed that approximately 1,500 Indonesian citizens were victims of TIP employed in 10 countries for online scams. Most of them are Gen Z and educated, some even have master’s degrees. “So, the victim profile we face from this online scam TIP case is very different from the victim profile of traditional TIP cases,” Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Judha Nugraha said in Cikini area, Central Jakarta, on Monday (20/10/2025). “What we are dealing with is the victim profile for online fraud TIP victims, one, Gen Z, aged 18-35 years, educated. If you are going to work abroad, make sure you have signed an employment contract while you are in Indonesia. “Then make sure you sign a work contract when you come to Indonesia. So it’s clear who the company is, its credibility, what salary it is, what rights it has,” he said. Apart from that, people should also be skeptical about the requirements when they leave. According to him, the requirements must strictly comply with procedures. “They all ended up staying. That was one of the complications when we tried to repatriate them. They were booked as committing immigration offences. Both in the home country and in the transit country,” he said. “For example, if you are asked, do not admit that you are working, but say that you are traveling or visiting family and so on. From here we should have been awake, we want to work officially, why are we told to lie, we should be more critical,” Judha continued. Judha previously said that from 2020 until now, about 10 thousand Indonesian citizens were involved in online scams. This figure is in 10 other countries. “Since 2020 until now, a total of more than 10 thousand cases of online scams have occurred, which initially occurred only in Cambodia, which spread to 9 other countries. In total, we have recorded 10 countries that have cases of Indonesian citizens involved in online scams,” said the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Central-the-Central, the Ciniha area.
