Guwahati (Assam) [India]April 2 (Ani): Assam’s iconic jewelry was awarded the prestigious geographical indication (GI) label. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, shared the news about his official handle on social media. He said that Assam’s jewelry is a significant part of his heritage and culture. He remembered that in the 2018-19 budget ‘we recommended to secure GI labels’ for the protection of the craftsmen, and eventually the efforts were successful, and Assam jewelry received a GI label. After X he wrote, “Assam’s jewelry -an inseparable part of our heritage -received his own geographical indication (GI) mark. I clearly remember that in the 2018-19 budget to secure the GI label. To get a GI label on any product, the association or organization that makes the products may apply. GI -label in India came into effect from September 15, 2003, and Darjeeling Tea became the first Indian product to get the GI label.
