Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Since 2020, a total of 10 thousand Indonesian citizens involved in online scams, 1,500 victims of TPPO
Jakarta – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) said that from 2020 until now, about 10 thousand Indonesian citizens were involved in online scams. This figure is in 10 other countries. “Since 2020 until now, a total of more than 10 thousand cases of online scams have occurred, which initially only happened in Cambodia, which spread to 9 other countries. In total, we have recorded 10 countries that have cases of Indonesian citizens involved in online scams,” said the director of protection for Indonesian citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Jaarta area, Jaikhair. One way Indonesian citizens can fall victim to TIP for this online job scam is by being offered a large salary. “So out of the 10 thousand in our records, around 1,500 are victims of TIP,” he said. “TPPO victims in Indonesia receive job offers abroad. Usually as customer service or marketing with a salary of between USD 1,000 to 1,200,” he said. However, there are also Indonesian citizens who are aware and volunteer to work for online scams because they receive high salary offers. Judha said that Indonesian citizens who are knowingly involved in fraud cases can be charged with crime. “There are those who are aware of it, yes, there are those who have moved in one way or another. So, for example, there are citizens of our country who already work in a destination country, then get an offer to work in a scam, because the salary offer is higher and the convenience is higher,” he said.
