Nepal: Generation Z's protest announcement of Rs 15 lakh for martyrs
Kathmandu, September 15 (IANS). After the uprising led by the youth in Nepal, the government announced an aidal package for the families of people who lost their lives during the Jane Z movement. The decision was finalized at the Cabinet meeting held on Monday. The Minister of Homes and Legislation, for Prakash Aryal, confirmed that every martyr’s family would receive a total compensation of Rs 15 Lakh. This includes direct financial assistance of Rs 10 Lakh and RS 5 Lakh for funeral and logistical expenses. The Gen-Z protests, which began after the government introduced controversial sanctions on 26 social media platforms on September 8 and 9, soon became nationwide turmoil. The protest march began violently as a peaceful protests against censorship and corruption, which had to resign Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. 72 people lost their lives, including 59 protesters, 10 prisoners and three police officers, while more than 1,300 people were injured. So far, 283 people across the country are being hospitalized. Minister Aryal said that compensation will be distributed by the Ministry of Finance, which will be coordinated by the Ministry of Home Affairs or the District Administration Office concerned. Apart from financial aid, the government will provide free medical treatment to all the injured. Transport will be arranged for those who died during protests to their hometown, including helicopter services for remote areas. The state will also help with funeral ceremonies. The Jane Z movement is widely recognized as a significant turn in the political scenario of Nepal. Inspired by corruption, nepotism and a lack of economic opportunities, these protests were mainly organized by young Nepalians under the age of 30, many of whom were coordinated by platforms such as Instagram and discard. -Ians Sch
