New rule for toll payers, now double the fee on cash, only 1.25 times the fee on UPI
To further strengthen the Digital India mission, the central government has now introduced strict rules for cash payments at toll plazas. Under the National Expressway Tolls (Determination of Rates and Collection) (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025, the new toll payment rules will come into force across the country from November 15, 2025. Through this amendment, the government has amended the National Expressway Tolls (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, to clearly determine the guidelines for the vehicle without. What is the new rule? Now, if a vehicle enters the toll plaza without a valid and working FASTag, it will have to pay a heavy price. On payment in cash, toll will be doubled, while on payment through UPI, toll will increase by 1.25 times. For example, if the toll for a vehicle is ₹100, the toll on cash payment will be ₹200, while on payment through UPI, the toll will be ₹125. Government’s goal: Eliminate cash, promote digital. This move by the Government of India is considered as a major step towards fully implementing the digital payment system at toll plazas and promoting cashless transactions. The aim of the government is to ensure that every vehicle on the National Highway pays digitally, which will not only increase transparency but also reduce crowding and congestion at toll plazas.
