Nigerian televangelist Tim Omotoso acquitted of rape in South Africa after 8-year legal battle

The senior minister of Jesus Dominion International (JDI) church faced 32 charges, including sexual exploitation and trafficking. A South African court acquitted Nigerian television Tim Omotoso of all charges, which put an end to an eight-year legal battle that jailed him for the allegations of rape and sexual assault. The Eastern Cape High Court in Gqeberha on Wednesday ruled that the state persecution did not prove the reasonable doubt that Omotoso, 66, was guilty of the charges against him, according to News24. However, he will be deported to Nigeria immediately. The senior minister of Jesus Dominion International (JDI) church faced 32 charges, including sexual exploitation and trafficking. Judge Irma Schoeman made the verdict and criticized the handling of the case of the prosecution. While she acknowledged that the explanations of Omotoso were “unlikely”, she said that the burden of proof was not fulfilled, which led to the acquittal of the pastor and his two co -accused. Omotoso was arrested in 2017 amid accusations that he chose young women from his congregation and forced them under the guise of spiritual guidance in sexual acts. Some of the women who testified against him were members of a gospel music group he founded, called Grace Galaxy, while others were still at school at the time of the alleged incidents. The prosecution argued that Omotoso used his religious influence to utilize vulnerable women, and often prayed for forgiveness after every meeting. However, the defense maintained that the allegations were unfounded and that they did not have concrete evidence.
