India is constantly upgrading its defense systems. India has stepped up its efforts to develop missiles and fighter jets using indigenous technology. After analyzing the Chinese PL-15 missile, the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) decided to incorporate some of its advanced features into the indigenously developed Astra Mark-2 missile project. This move by DRDO comes after the analysis of PL-15E missile fired by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. This missile was fired from JF-17 or J-10C fighter jets of the Pakistan Air Force. It crashed in a field near Hoshiarpur in Punjab. PL-15 missile recovered in Punjab The PL-15E missile was recovered intact from a field near Hoshiarpur in Punjab on May 9, in a rare intelligence opportunity for Indian defense scientists. The PL-15E missile, unlike Indian air-to-air missiles, was found to be non-explosive due to the lack of a self-destruct mechanism in the weapon. After that its features were tested and now DRDO decided to incorporate the features of PL-15 missile in Astra Mark-2 missile. The Chinese weapon has many outstanding features DRDO has not yet shared any details about its analysis report submitted to the defense ministry. According to a report in Hindustan Times, people familiar with the matter on condition of anonymity said the tests revealed many excellent features of the Chinese weapon. These include a miniaturized active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar with advanced propellers capable of maintaining speeds in excess of Mach 5 and sophisticated anti-jamming capabilities. All these advances, especially radar technology, are being incorporated into India’s indigenous Astra missile development program. Pakistan wants to acquire PL-17 missiles The Pakistan Air Force is reportedly trying to buy long-range PL-17 missiles from China, 2,000 YIHA kamikaze drones from Turkey and has also handed over a list of high-tech weapons to the US. Meanwhile, Indian defense planners are moving towards purchasing additional Meteor missiles for the Rafale fighter jets to ensure that the Indian Air Force does not face a manpower shortage in the future. A next-generation BrahMos missile with a range of 800 kilometers is also being developed, which will cover almost all of Pakistan. Share this story Tags
