Ontario premier pulls Reagan ad after furious Trump halts US-Canada trade talks

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday, October 25, that he has decided to withdraw the anti-tariff ad that angered US President Donald Trump so that trade talks between the US and Canada can resume. The ad prompted Donald Trump to end all trade talks with Canada. Doug Ford said he made the decision after speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney. “We have achieved our goal, having reached American audiences at the highest levels,” Ford said in a statement, adding, “Our intent has always been to start a conversation about the kind of economy Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses.” Ford said the ads will air throughout the weekend, including during the opening games of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. “I instructed my team to continue to push our message to Americans over the weekend so that we can air our ad during the first two World Series games,” he said. Earlier in the day, Donald Trump ended “all trade negotiations” with Canada after an Ontario-sponsored ad used former President Ronald Reagan’s words to criticize tariffs imposed by the US. What did Donald Trump say? Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Canada, ending all trade talks with the neighboring country and calling the ad “fake”. He said: “The Ronald Reagan Foundation just announced that Canada fraudulently used an ad, which is FALSE, in which Ronald Reagan talks negatively about tariffs. The ad was for $75,000,000. TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY AND ECONOMY OF THE USA.” Trump doubled down on his criticism of the Ontario ads and accused Canada of trying to influence an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling on its global tariff regime. He said, “CANADA HAS INVOLVED AND IS GONE!!! They fraudulently took a big buy ad and said that Ronald Reagan did not like tariffs, when in fact he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY.” “Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in our country’s history. Canada has been cheating on Tariffs for a long time, charging our farmers as much as 400%. Now they, and other countries, can no longer benefit from the USA. Thanks to the Ronald Reagan Foundation for exposing this FRAUD AGAIN!!!” FRAUD AGAIN!!!”
