UTTAR PRADESH: Panic on Sunday evening seized the Government Medical College in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after rumors of a fire and gas leak caused a crowded situation. Arbared attendees struggled to evacuate patients and create chaos across the facility, officials said. While eyewitnesses demanded that several patients sustained injuries, the authorities denied such reports, Pti reports. District Magistrate Dharmendra Pratap Singh confirmed that an investigation had been started to investigate the death of a patient suffering from a lung ailment, although preliminary findings indicate that it may not be related to the incident. What happened at about 5pm at Government Medical College, some people in the hospital complained about a gas leak and brought them to panic. District Magistrate Dharmendra Pratap Singh told PTI that the frightened may have been caused by the smell of formaline gas – a chemical used regularly in medical facilities – possibly leaking from the Operation Theater. “Our fire and police teams immediately reached the place. No loss of life or injuries has been reported,” Dharmendra Pratap Singh told Pti. A few people also claimed that there was a fire, who urged those present to chase the patients out of the hospital, which resulted in a crowded situation, officials said. The smell of formalin founded the principal of Government Medical College Rajesh Kumar, told PTI that the smell of formalin – a chemical used for anesthesia and conservation – was detected near the Trauma Center’s Operation Theater. “We opened the windows and doors to ventilate the area, and spread the odor. Meanwhile, a rumor over the spread of oxygen leaks, which caused the panic,” he said.
