Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park (Patna Zoo) achieved a remarkable achievement, which is second in terms of rhino population in the world to the American Zoo in San Diego. The zoo currently has 10 rhino, including six male and four females of four different breeds. The journey of rhinos to Patna Zoo began on May 28, 1979, when the first couple, a man named Kancha and a woman named Kanchi, were brought from Assam. In March 1982, a third rhino rescued from Bettiah entered the park. The first rhino, born in Patna Zoo, a woman named Haratali, came on July 8, 1988, after which another woman, Queen, was born thanks to excellent management, reproductive programs and excellent care of the zoo. By 1991, the population of rhino increased to five, which was an important achievement for the zoo. This was followed by Raja in December 1993 and Bajrangi in 1997, born of Haratali at the age of nine. To increase the quality of the breeding, a male rhino was brought to Ayodhya of Delhi animal garden in 2005, and in 2007 a female rhino Gauri and a calf Lali were brought from the San Diego animal garden in the USA under the Wildlife Exchange program. The ongoing growth of rhinos in Patna Animal Garden underlines the Institute’s dedication to the conservation of wildlife and reproductive excellence, giving it an international recognition.
