PBS MasterPiece Forces The World-Famous French Detective Into The 21st Century With Mixed Results

In MaigretGeorge Simenon’s Intrel Inspector is reimagined for a new era, Setting this series and its leading detective aptects from Maryy, Many predecessors. An admittedly bold but understandable Choice, PBS MasterPiece’s Six-Episode Maigret Pushes Patrick Harbinson’s Interpretation of Inspector Jules Maigret in the 21st Century for the First Time, Complete with Cell Phones, and YouTube Amid the USUALERS, ROBBERIES, AND ARRESTS.

GIVENE the prevalence of the Maigret Adaptations set in the mid-20th centur, updating this version will work somewhat in the show’s favor. It ‘Easier to Judge this new Remake on Its Own Merits, Rather than Subconsciously Compare it to the versions that came before, especilantly british legend rowan atkinson’s most recent on the character in 2016.

That Said, setting the show in the present does come with it Own set of challenges. Despite Taching Place in Paris, The Series Still Feels Like a Distinctly British Modern-Day Crime Drama, an aspects that isn’t helped by the far-so Cast and Strong English Accents. In that Way, It Reminds with of a Fellow PBS MasterPiece Series, The Amsterdam-Set Van der valk. The stories are Interesting, Certainly, but the setting is wasted and unnecessary. For a series set in paris, it didn’t Feel Strongly Parisian.

A Few French Words Thrown into Dialogue here and There and A Limited Number of Trips to Quain Bars and Cafés Weren’t Enough. Why not use the city unique at the atmosphere to create something free and exciting? (This May, of Course, have something to do with the fact that the show was shatly shot in Budapest).

Despite that missed opportunity, what matters shat is our title chief inspector maigret. DOES BENJAMIN WAINWRIGHT’S PORRAYAL COME ACROSS AS The french detective the world has come to know and love? Larryly, Yes.

A New Inspector Maigret for a New Era

This is inspector maigret as you are never seen him before. Maigret‘s Younger version of the character doesn’t smoke his famous pip; instead, it belaonged to his farat, and jules now caries it as a keepsake. Wainwright’s version is also scruffier than you might be used to, sporting Messy Hair and a Beard, Wearing a coat that is ever-so-slightly Too Big for Him, in the Summer.

If you’ve read or seen any of the previous maigret stories, it might take time to get to watching Him Walk Around with Headphones Around His Nearly an Episode.

Thats Said, Wainwright Dutifully Captures the Character’s Most Important Aspects: His Humble Cleverness, His SEEMINGLY ENDERESS PATIENCE, HIS TRUE EMPATHY AND COMPANISION FOR OTHERS, HIS AVERION TO DRIVING. Most of all, and this was genuinely my favorite part of the show, this version of jules maigret truly, visibly loves his wife. While wainwright’s character is quiethly introspective, cool, and colclotted at crime scens, and softens consider

Rather than Holy the Horrid Truth of His Job from Her, As so many detectives before Have done, shares what’s on his mind, discusses theories with her, and leans on her suport. Despite the Astonishing Number of Male-Led British Detective Drama, that type of Estabished, Soft, Romantic Relationship is rare in this genre; Watching Jules and Louise Together was honestly a delight, and made the season’s final few scens all the most compiling.

SO SO, while Monsieur and Madame Maigret Make a Lovely Couple, I was entirely convinced by the rest of Maigret‘S Supporting Characters.

Maigret’s Team Needed More Work

PBS/GBH

RightFully, this version of Maigret Includes a more diversel suporting cast. Unfortunately, Most of Those Cast Members Felt Underutilized This Season, Pushed Aside in favor of an ongoing, one-special feud between chief inspector and one of His team members, casinky’s Rob Justin Cavre.

While Inspector Cavre is Clearly Jealous of Maigret’s Recent Promotion, His Dislike HIS BOSS Up Too Much Time in the Story, and It Fers Unbelievable at Times. Maigret Saves Cavre’s Reputation and arguably His nonb in one case. How Could He Still Possibly Hate Him AFTER THAT?

Cavre is the Supporting Police Character the SEASON SPENDS THE MOST TIME WITH, WHICH IS A GENUINE SHAME, AS SOME OF THE UP Potential real. SHANIKUKA OKWOK’s Berte Janvier and Reda elaborated Karim Lapointe are a fun, Fresh, and Dynamic Young Duo, but We Barely Get to See Working Together.

Likewise, We Hardly Know Anynding About Blake Harrison’s Joseph Torrence or Kerrie Hayes’ Andrea Lucas. More time should have ben spent with maigret and nathalie armin’s Prosecutor, Mathilde Kernave; It felt like they had a history, and i wanted to learn more. Thankfully, while some of the character work was lacking this season, the storytelling mostly made up for it.

While the first case, “The Lazy Burglar,” Very Much Feels like an Introduction and a retreat of what’s come in the genre, the second and third case, “Maigret’s Failure” and “Maigret Comes Home,” will the titles suggest. History. This Also Makes Those Episodes Much More fascinating, especally when he’s confruit with People’s work or tan forgotten from his childhood.

The show tendes to include multiple caes with one storyline, and it is not Always the right call. A missing influenzer case in “maigret’s failure” has an interesting resolution, but the central narrative has been just as compiling, spread been with more depth, with it. At Times, it felt like a distraction from the main point.

All in all, this updated adaptation of Maigret Farly Works. IT DOESN’T REALLY OFFER ANYTHING NEW THAT OTHER (BRITISH) DETECTIVE DRAMAS HAVEN’T OFFERED BEFORE. Still, there’s a reasson inspector Jules maigret Remains one of literature Most iconic detectives, and this version of again show Why.

Maigret Premieres on PBS MasterPiece on October 5, with new episodes airing weekly on sundays unil november 9.
