GST Reforms: What can get cheaper to Narendra Modi's next generation of goods and services in India?
GST Reforms: In an attempt to reduce tax burden across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared ‘next generation GST reforms’ during his speech on Independence Day. Modi has hinted that GST reforms can be implemented by Diwali 2025. People who are aware of the developments on the GST front said on condition of anonymity that goods falling below the 12% GST plate may fall below the 5% GST plate, while goods fall below the 28% GST sleep. However, they said there would be an additional 40% GST plate for goods that fall under the category of sin, which includes tobacco products such as cigarettes and beer. Since GST is a consumption-oriented tax, the ultimate beneficiary of the next generation GST reforms is the consumer, who will pay less due to the lower GST. What will get cheaper? According to these people, the GST reforms will make everyday necessities significantly more affordable – from groceries and medicines to televisions and washing machines. Agriculture equipment, bikes and even insurance and education services will become cheaper, which provides direct relief to households and farmers, while increasing the consumption of the economy. They said there would be only three GST pages – 5%, 18%and 40%. About 99% of the goods falling below the 12% GST plate would fall into the 5% GST plate, while the same number of goods falling below the 28% GST plate falls below the 18% GST plate. GST Reforms in India The central government has sent its proposals to the group of ministers investigating the GST rationalization. This group will place recommendations before the GST Council, the Apex -Federal Body over indirect tax consisting of finance ministers from all states and chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The council is empowered to accept or reject the proposal with or without amendment. “We have discussed with states and we bring along the next generation GST reforms that will reduce the tax burden across the country,” Modi said during his Independence Day speech on Friday, adding: “This Diwali, I’m going to make it a double Diwali for you. This Diwali, your countrymen will get a great gift.”
