Video: Stray Dogs in Shimla to be marked with QR and GPS - here's the reason
In a significant step to tackle the Dog Menace, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has launched a campaign in which all stray dogs will be equipped with QR and GPS-based collars to monitor the behavior of the dogs. This comes weeks after the Supreme Court’s commission for the removal of stray dogs from Delhi NCR – which has made great setbacks from politicians, activists and citizens. These labels, which are tied around the necks of the dogs, will contain essential information, such as sterilization status, vaccination records, overall health, age and behavior. Residents can access all this information about the dogs by scanning the details, according to a report from the Tribune. The labeling process will be performed in tandem with NGOs and volunteers. The corporation will also start an awareness program to educate Hill States residents on how to handle aggressive stray dogs. Information, Education and Communications (IEC) material will be widely distributed among school children, locals and ward councilors to promote awareness and to ensure community safety, the report added. The issue of stray dog attacks remains an utmost importance in the capital Himachal Pradesh, with more than 800 dog bite cases registered, the Tribune reports. SC over Stray Dog Case reserved the Apex Court on Thursday its order in the Stray Dogs case. The hearing comes in the widespread protests against the Supreme Court’s order for the removal of stray dogs from all NCR places. The hearing was witness to a fierce exchange, with senior lawyer Kapil Sibal having an urgent stay on August 11. He warned that moving all stray dogs to shelters could lead to cruelty, thinning and health hazards. On the other hand, the attorney general pointed out that India scores more than 37 Lakh dog bite cases each year, and emphasizes that the Supreme Court’s Richtelijn stems from serious concerns about public safety. The case was recorded after it was listed in the open court a few hours after it was named in front of Chief Justice Br Gavai. “I’ll investigate it,” the CJI said.
