Political suppression period in Bangladesh, another leader of the Awami League arrested

Dhaka, April 5 (IANS). In another incident, which exposed the constant suppression of political dissatisfaction in Bangladesh, a leader of the Awami League party was detained Saturday morning. Police later confirmed the arrest of Ma Khalak, general secretary of the Awami League of Mehrpur district. Khalak is also the former chairman of Gangni Upazila Parishad. However, police did not disclose the specific reasons for his arrest. According to the leading newspaper ‘The Daily Star’ of Bangladesh, Khalak was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion ball in a case related to the uprising in July last year. He was later granted bail. Khalak was removed from all official posts after the collapse of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. As the power was adopted in August 2024, the interim government did a cruel action against the leaders of the Awami League, most of whom were extremely weak. Last month, three leaders of the Awami League, including a former MLA of Tangel-5 constituency, were arrested in connection with the alleged attack on the student movement in the Bhatara area of the capital. Earlier this week, seven people were arrested because police suspected their supporters of the Awami League and his associated organizations. The accused took a march in favor of the party’s student wing ‘Student League’ in Silhat. In another attack on members of the Awami League, the residences of former mayor Anwarujman Chaudhary and former MP Shafiul Alam Chaudhary were attacked and vandalized under the banner of the Nationalist Party (BNP). Several leaders of the Awami League were brutally attacked and killed after Sheikh Hasina was removed from power. Several reports indicate that the bodies of more than two dozen Awami league leaders and their family members were restored from all over the country in August 2024. -Ians mk/ share this story tags
