Minister: 6 People died because of the Marburg virus in Rwanda

Health Minister Sabine Nesanzimana confirmed late Saturday night, the survey of 6 deaths and 20 cases of Marburg disease since the beginning of the epidemic. Nesanzimana said in a photo clearance published on the “X” website that most of the injured healthcare professionals in the intensive care unit. He added: “We have monitored 20 people with the virus and 6 have already died as a result. The vast majority of cases and deaths between healthcare professionals, especially in the intensive care unit.” The ministry said that Marburg, a viral bleeding fever, could cause death for some of the injured, with symptoms involving severe headaches, vomiting, muscle pain and stomach pain. The minister pointed out that the institutions and partners are locating the people who were in contact with individuals with the virus. The death rate of the Merburg virus is 88%, belongs to the same virus family responsible for Ebola, and is transferred to people from fruit bats. Then it spreads by touching the body fluids to the injured people. The neighboring state of Tanzania saw cases of the Marburg virus in 2023, while Uganda saw similar issues in 2017.
