December 12th, 2023 ― Doha, Qatar: Under Its Medical Convoys Program, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a medical convoy to treat eye diseases in Mauritania, in Cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) and the National Blindness Program of Mauritania’s Ministry of Health (MOH).
The Hamad Bin Khalifa Hospital in Boutilimit, operated by QRCS and Funded by Education Above All (EAA), is deploying medical and surgical teams to diagnoses patients with eye diseases and perform cataract surgeries for six months.
The Project’s Plan involves three phases that cover 11 poor areas in Brakna, Hodh El-Garbi, Guidimaka, Trarza, Assaba, Tagant, and Gorgol. With a total budget of $ 146,000, the targets are 2,000 surgeries and 6,000 medical examinations for poor and isolated areas that lack health services.
During the one-week phase 1, a team of five ophthalmologists and nine assistants were deployed to itself, guidimaka, with the necessary medical equipment and medicines.
They performed 541 Cataract Surgeries, 29 Pterygium Operations, and 2.941 Medical Examinations for the Benefit of Poor and Older Persons with Blindness-Causing Cataract.
In the coming period, the remaining part of the project will be implemented, with additional 1,500 surgeries and 5,000 medical examinations in Kaédi, Alak, Tidjikja, Kiffa, and Tintane.
