Rahul Gandhi will visit Assam on October 17 to pay tribute to singer Zubeen Garg.

Guwahati, October 15 (IANS). Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will visit Assam on October 17 to pay tribute to famous singer Zubeen Garg. According to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Rahul Gandhi will reach Guwahati and visit Sonapur on the outskirts of the city. The last rites of Zubeen Garg were performed in Sonapur itself. On behalf of the Congress, it was informed that Rahul Gandhi may pay floral tributes at the spot and later go to the deceased singer’s residence and meet the bereaved family and express his condolences. APCC Media Department informed that the necessary arrangements have been made to carry out the program in a dignified and orderly manner. The party said that Rahul Gandhi’s visit reflects the deep respect and emotional bond that people across Assam have for Zubeen Garg. Meanwhile, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi termed the incident outside the Baksa District Jail as unfortunate. He said people should maintain peace and pay attention to the lapse in law enforcement. Gogoi said the people of Assam are united in demanding justice for late singer Zubeen Garg. “Justice can only be achieved through the legal process. Taking the law into one’s own hands will not serve the purpose,” he said. He appealed to the citizens to maintain calm and patience in this sensitive time. He accused both the police and the Department of Home Affairs of failing to foresee the unrest. Gogoi said, “It was the responsibility of the law enforcement machinery to assess the situation and take preventive measures. It is because of their failure that this incident happened today.” –IANS MS/ABM Share this story Tags
