Indias coal input is increasing in June
New Delhi, August 25 (PTI) The country’s coal imports rose 1.5 percent to 76.40 million tonnes in the April June period of the current fiscal, compared to 75.26 MT in the previous period, even as the government increased the domestic production of the fossil fuels. The country’s coal imports in June also increased to 23.91 million tonnes (MT) by more than 22.97 MT in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal, according to Mjunction Services Ltd, a B2B E-trading platform and a joint venture between Tata Steel and Sail. During April-June, the import of coal substances were 49.08 MT, almost flat compared to 49.12 MT, which was imported into the previous fiscal during the same period. The import of coal was at 16.37 MT during April-June 2025, compared to 15.45 MT recorded for April-June 2024. Of total imports in June, non-cool coal imports stood at 14.85 MT, compared to 14.19 MT imported in June last year. Coking coal import stood at 5.78 MT, compared to 5.45 MT imported in June 2024. The Cil’s coal production of the state fell 8.5 percent in June to 57.8 million tonnes in June from 63.1 MT in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal. However, the company, which constitutes more than 80 percent of domestic coal production, has not given a reason for the decline in coal production. According to the analysts of the industry, coal production usually has barriers during the monsoon season. As a result, the output of mines is lower, which therefore affects the shipping to power plants. Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy said earlier that the country was not facing coal in the upcoming monsoon season, as the government is well prepared to meet demand in various sectors, including the power sector. The Ministry of Coal said earlier that it is still committed to achieving sustainable growth, improving the availability of coal and reducing the dependence on imports. With the positive momentum, the coal sector still plays an important role in the power of India’s growth story.
