The You’re Cordially Invited star continued, “So she and I went and made chocolates. And it doesn’t matter if you’re making chocolates, you’re picking flowers, you’re painting by numbers, you’re cooking a meal for your family or friends, get busy doing something.”
Witherspoon captioned her post: “When you have anxiety: Get out of your head, and into your hands,” adding that the idea was inspired by author and life coach Martha Beck.
And honestly? This makes so much sense. Research shows that working with your hands can improve mindfulness, reduce stress and manage anxiety. And while I’m inclined to agree that making chocolate with Witherspoon would be especially fun, studies show that there are plenty of hands-on activities (like gardening and knitting) that can improve your mood. One caveat: Scrolling on your phone does not apply.
So the next time the Sunday Scaries hit or you’re feeling a little anxious, remember the wise words from our new mindfulness coach Reese Witherspoon: “Get out of your head, and into your hands.” Noted.
