99% of these influencers literally go all out on the same just to make these videos it’s crazy

  2. ValorVixen Avatar

This is the content cycle though, right? They need to get as much content as they can out of each product. In mostly chronological order:

    1. What Im planning to Buy! Recommendations
    2. Sephora sale haul and try on
    3. Regrets/reviews after using for a little while
    4. Ranking best/worst products of the month/season/year
    5. Declutter!

I don’t blame anyone for getting tired or jaded by it either – I haven’t watched much beauty content this year either. I don’t like it, but I can’t really blame influencers for doing what the industry wants them to.

TLDR influencers are posting their “regrets” from the Sephora sale. I think this is so tacky because most of them made multiple videos promoting the sale

  4. im_a_reddituser Avatar

tbh most influencers are tasteless and just about trends. Remember when last year they talked about underconsumption and what they are no longer buying? Nearly all creators watched barely stuck to it for 2 months

It’s so whack how they buy so much random stuff without even researching it and then have regrets. It’s so wasteful. They know their preferences by now so buying hyped up or dumb stuff is on them.

Re: general reply to all the comments saying they should return the items… Am I insane for thinking *BGs* should not be returning products unless there is something wrong with it? Not just a matter of preference. If they don’t like it, tough. It’s going into the garbage at some point, be it their garbage during a declutter or at the store it was returned to.

Should they buy less, of course, but they already bought it, so shoulda woulda coulda.

If they returned everything they didn’t like, they’d be banned from returns by the end of the week. If this is their job, it’s also their job to take the financial hit.

  7. ScamIam Avatar

What are they complaining about? They’re still within the return window ffs

  8. RubiesNotDiamonds Avatar

I’ve bought nothing. No regrets. I have it all.

  9. stink3rb3lle Avatar

I skip the hauls because that much consumption at once stresses me out but I don’t mind the try ons/first impressions.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over just how crap and tacky YouTube thumbnails are – even from supposedly ‘professional’ influencers who have been successful for years. They look so badly put together and amateurish. Nothing about them is aspirational or tempts me to watch the video, and the clickbait expressions are so annoying.

I feel like the old man shouts at clouds meme.

The girl in the second slide makes me sad. I remember watching a video she made years ago when she talked about how she would buy and buy and buy makeup. That she’d get a rush every time a package was at her door and keep seeking that high. She was deeply depressed during that period and then decided to curb her purchases for the sake of her mental health.

A few years later, I see her pop up with perfume hauls. She was buying every new perfume release. Like 10 to 15 bottles at a time.

I actually don’t really come after people for spending their money how they please (and I can’t be a hypocrite cause I’ve definitely gone through phases of buying too much makeup). If you’re a perfume collector and that’s what gives you pleasure, then sure… But, I remember her saying how unhealthy all that shopping was for her, in terms of her mental health, so the video made me question her returning to these old habits.

Yeah Lauren Mae’s video put a bad taste in my mouth because in the few days before she posted a video (maybe even multiple) saying to buy some of those things….

  13. divadream Avatar

Just like REVIEWS are officially ONLY First Impressions now… or even just Swatches + Demo

  14. ntfandalways Avatar

Honestly pretty much every influencer gives me second hand embarrassment. They’re so annoying

  15. fallopian_rampant Avatar

Here’s a thought: maybe they should be more mindful of what they’re purchasing

  16. nebula-dirt Avatar

And *this* is why I don’t watch them. Just buying crap they really don’t even like for content.

  17. Capital-Way-439 Avatar

Complaining about what eventually is a tax write off in some instances lol

Angelica with the hands pose, I can’t

OK unpopular opinion but I think we are reading way too much into this “regret” language here. I doubt any of them have actual feelings of regret about anything they bought. It will pay for itself though the content they make. The point of these channels is to give good and bad reviews of products so that we have a better idea of what is worth our money. If they get a bad review out of it, they have still done their job and they won’t really truly regret it. It’s really saying to their viewers “if you bought this product (as a non content creator) are you likely to regret it?” Which, in case we all forgot here, is pretty much the reason we watch beauty gurus right?!

  20. bumblebeatrice Avatar

It *is* tacky and tone-deaf but at the same time that means more reviews and opinions that I can use to make a more informed opinion and spend *my* money more judiciously.

Some of them may go broke, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make 😔

I know people love Teresa but I can’t stand her anymore

  22. Zappagrrl02 Avatar

It’s the same cycle every year – what I’m buying at the sale, Sephora sale haul/unboxing, and then regrets from the Sephora sale. Rinse and repeat

  23. Viyana Avatar

i haven’t watched beauty influencers in years but weren’t most of these chicks specifically known for the whole “what i’m not gonna buy” thing a few years ago?

  24. Senn_Kyu Avatar

Haven’t watched the other two but I enjoyed Lauren’s video. It’s not my money she’s spending so that part is whatever to me. She’s great at describing what makes a product work or not for her so her review/first impression videos are more informative than most, and for first impressions she usually follows up with her full thoughts in future videos too. The only cost to me as a viewer is my time and I never feel like I wasted it when I watch her (non advent calendar lol) videos because she’s a thorough reviewer and describer. She gets into the nitty gritty. If anything, I wish more influencers were like Lauren: actually have something informative and thoughtful to say about the products they buy to actually help other consumers make informed purchasing decisions.

And maybe it’s because I know I’m not buying like 99% of these products, so I just have different expectations and treat videos like Lauren’s like infotainment more than anything. Youtubers love to bandy about the phrase “spending my money so you don’t have to” but in my case it really is true. I like knowing about what’s new (especially the more bougie stuff) and not spending a centavo lol. And when someone can thoroughly talk about why an expensive product doesn’t work for them then even better lol.

I agree with most about this post. I’m happy I unfollowed most of the long time Make up “influencers” I’m down to maybe 3, I can’t remember exactly who. I know Jen Phelps is one I still follow and Judy and I’m sure there is someone else too but I just don’t like watching these kinds of videos anymore.

Not really about the obnoxious overconsumption anymore, or the crazy no skill make up applications its just the trend is fading a bit so my interest is as well. I tend to find my make up through testing in person at Ulta, I do not buy from Sephora. No other reason then Ulta is way better at reward points and I love how large the store is I don’t feel so crowded.

Oh and about Angelica, I use to really enjoy her content but now I also find myself bored and not into her. Not really sure why. I do find myself wanting to hand her a clothespin though as her top seems to always seem to be falling off her. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

    So tasteless! Test in store!

  27. NotACalvinist Avatar

AKA “What I’m going to return to Sephora because I got the views from buying and trying already.”

  28. PhyrraNyx Avatar

It’s not to my taste, so I skip watching. I didn’t shop the sale at all and normally I hit up the sale for at least Cinema Secrets brush cleaner.

  29. Tnh7194 Avatar

You know what’s crazy for me? The ones doing Sephora recommendation videos before the sale AND BUY EVERYTHING BEFORE THE SALE JUST TO SHOW THE PACKAGE.
And they’re like, “i’ll buy another one in the sale to stock up”

  30. CaliforniaSun77 Avatar

Seeing all the videos on what I’m returning from my massive haul is maddening. It’s so wasteful.

  31. LibraryLuLu Avatar

Theresa is dead is a perfect sugar bunny who can do no wrong! But yeah, otherwise you are correct.

  32. samra25 Avatar

I don’t know. They buy a bunch of stuff to review, and some of it doesn’t work out. So they make a click baity video. I don’t think that’s unexpected.

  33. Dr_Beard_MD Avatar

It’s this false equivalency that we almost regard the influencers as they are regular consumers, but they *are* buying all that stuff for videos because making videos about products is what they do. That being said, I am bored with that continuous cycle of purchases followed by “first impressions” then maybe a review then no other comments. It would be more interesting to me if there were more longitudinal conversations about fewer products – more meaningful comparisons. Plus, If they have all these products in their collections, then use them to tell us how well they work together in lots of combinations, especially among primers / complexion products or between complexion with face / cheek combos. That’s what I want to know about a product before I buy – how’s it gonna work with what I have?
