Residents admit that grandfather Subari's snake makes motorbikes not dare to cross the pavement

Jakarta – Grandfather Subari (75)’s actions were in the spotlight because he dared to place a large python on the pavement to prevent ‘unruly’ motorbikes from still using pedestrian access in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. Subari’s actions appear to be effective. A resident, Anwar, said when Subari’s python appeared, no motorbike dared to pass on the pavement when the traffic was jammed. According to him, the size of Subari’s large python made motorcyclists think about crossing it on the pavement. “Yes, when the snake was placed there, no one passed by. I was afraid that if the snake was placed there, it would be really big,” Anwar said when detikcom met at the location, Saturday (18/10/2025). The traffic jam itself was caused by the narrowing of the road due to the excavation project on Jalan Haji Bokir bin Djiun, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. “If there’s a traffic jam, yes (the motorbike goes up to the pavement). Here, when you go back to work, it’s stuck, so motorbikes just go up,” Anwar explains. He explained that Subari had had a python for a long time, ever since he was small. He said that Subari had always taken his snakes out to dry in the sun. “In the past, he used to dry his snakes in the sun, going back and forth to the other side. Now maybe because the snakes are getting bigger, they are a bit rare, at least here,” explains Anwar. Another resident, Ibrahim, also explained the same. Since Subari put the snake on the sidewalk, as far as he could see, there were no more motorcycles passing by. “Yes, if there is a snake, no one will pass on a motorcycle, I’m afraid that’s for sure. Motorcycles pass here during traffic jams,” said Ibrahim. Previously, Subari’s grandfather had admitted that he was genuinely disturbed by the behavior of motorbikes that regularly denied pedestrians the right to pass on the pavement. The sidewalks in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta (Jaktim) are often ‘colonized’ by motorbikes trying to avoid traffic jams. Subari also spread out his pet reptile on the pavement so that there would be no more naughty motorbikes. Grandpa Subari’s performance went viral on social media and received support from passers-by. Subari admitted he felt sorry for pedestrians who had to fight with motorbikes to pass on the pavement. He was annoyed by the actions of motorbikes that encroached on pedestrians’ rights. “It is difficult for pedestrians when motorbikes drive over. So I took the initiative, I took my hose out on the pavement,” Subari told 20detik on Friday (17/10). Motorcyclists no longer dared to cross the pavement after Subari unfolded his python. Grandpa Subari’s trick was successful in driving motorbikes away from the pavement. He hopes that pedestrians will get their rights to move around comfortably. (zap/zap)
