Common foods may weaken the effectiveness of treatment – ryan

Some specialists highlight the importance of paying attention to the diet in thyroid patients, stressing that some foods and nutritional supplements may directly affect the absorption of drugs for treating the failure of the gland.

They pointed out that there are a number of nutrients that may interfere with the effectiveness of hormonal drugs used to treat the failure of the gland activity, noting that these interferences may weaken the body’s ability to absorb the drug as required.

They stressed the need to stay away from foods rich in fiber immediately after taking the medicine, as the fibers, despite their importance to health, may slow down the absorption of the medicine when taking it shortly after it, and for this, it is preferable to wait at least two hours before eating a meal rich in fiber.

Beware of some vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, and turnip, as they contain compounds that may negatively affect the absorption of the thyroid hormone, reduce caffeine and tobacco, because of their effect on the effectiveness of medications.

According to the “Mayo Clinic” medical website, thyroid insufficiency occurs when the gland is unable to produce sufficient amounts of hormones responsible for regulating vital processes in the body, and is also known as “hypothyroidism”.

The symptoms often do not appear clearly in the early stages, except that ignoring the condition may lead over time to greater health problems, including high cholesterol and heart disorders.

The diagnosis process depends on blood tests, while the treatment is usually based on the intake of the compensatory hormone on a daily basis, a treatment characterized by simplicity and effectiveness when adhering to it.

Symptoms of thyroid failure include: constant feeling of fatigue, excessive allergies towards cold, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, face swelling, roughness in sound, hair loss, weakness, muscle pain and stiffness, menstrual disorders, slow heartbeat, mood swings and depression, difficulty in concentration and poor memory.
