Samara Weaving joins remake of ‘ultraviolent and hilarious’ Netflix horror

Samara Weaving is set to star in a new thriller that’s drawing inspiration from one of the most bizarre horror-comedies of recent years.

The original film, 2021’s The Trip, featured Noomi Rapace of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fame and Aksel Hennie as a dysfunctional couple who retreat to an isolated cabin under the guise of mending their fractured relationship.

Yet, the plot takes a wildly dark comedic twist when it’s revealed that both partners have secretly plotted to murder each other, only for their plans to be disrupted by some unexpected guests.

Weaving, celebrated for her roles in Scream VI, Ready or Not, and The Babysitter series, has been cast alongside Jason Segel. The ensemble also includes Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and MMA fighter Keith Jardine.

Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island fame is at the helm, directing from a screenplay penned by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, with production currently taking place in Tampere, Finland, reports the Mirror US.

Tommy Wirkola, who directed the original movie, expressed his enthusiasm: “I can’t wait to see Jorma bring his totally singular sensibility to the material.

“That, combined with this killer cast, makes me beyond excited that this film will truly stand out in the cinematic landscape.”

Taccone also shared his thoughts: “I’m a huge fan of Tommy’s work and I love the original film. I have a totally singular sensibility, and I can’t wait to see what I bring to the material.”

For those curious about the story, the original Norwegian thriller is currently available for streaming on Netflix.

The film has amassed a sizeable cult following, and one enthusiastic fan gushed on Letterboxd: “It’s part comedy, thriller, action, drama and horror.

“The tonal shifts might turn some people off but I found it worked to keep catching me off guard. I’m laughing my a** off one minute totally unprepared for the horror around the corner.”

Another cinephile chimed in: “It’s hyperviolent yet so exaggerated that you’ll never mistake it for a serious tone, the tongue is firmly hammered in cheek with fun surprises and builds up the extremities to an exciting and unrestrained finale.

“The gore is practical, quite painful and incredibly well done.”

One more movie buff added: “I don’t know how this got onto my watchlist, but I’m so glad it did. This was perfectly paced – not a single sequence wasted, every minute building on the last in terms of impact.

“It’s beautifully balanced across so many genres: a hilarious dark comedy, a nail-biting thriller, and a well-choreographed action film splattered with blood and guts and gore.”
