Sharjeel Imam, who is accused of Delhi's riot case, withdrew his interim bail.

New -delhi, October 14 (IANS). The JNU alumnus Sharjeel Imam, who is accused of the 2020 riots case, on Tuesday withdrew its interim bail pleader of the Karkardooma Court in Delhi. He submitted this petition to participate in the Bihar election. Sharjeel Imam sought interim bail of 14 days from the court so that he could contest the election as an independent candidate of the Bahadurganj seat. However, during the hearing, his lawyer decided to withdraw the petition. Sharjel Imam’s lawyer said his regular bail petition is currently pending in the Supreme Court. Therefore, the appropriate forum to apply for interim bail is the Supreme Court and not the trial court. On this basis, an attempt was made to withdraw the interim bail petition filed in Karkardooma Court. Sharjeel Imam is accused of giving inflammatory speeches. A case is registered against him under divisions related to high treason, criminal conspiracy and high treason. Delhi police charge states that Sharjeel gave challenging speeches during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC in Shaheen Bagh and Jamia, who encouraged violence. Sharjeel was arrested from Jehanabad in Bihar in January 2020 and has since been in judicial detention. Sharjeel Imam announced that he would compete as an independent candidate of the Bahadurganj seat in the Bihar election 2025. For this, he temporarily released two weeks of the court so that he could participate in the nomination and campaign. Sharjeel’s intention to dispute elections has created a new discussion in Bihar politics. Earlier, on September 2, the Delhi High Court denied bail for Imam, Khalid and other accused, including Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Atar Khan, Shifa-Urrehman, Mohammad Salim Khan, Shadab Ahmed and Khalid SiFi. –Is VKU/BC shares this story tags
