Singapore: PM Lawrence Wong showed global uncertainties before the election in May

Singapore, April 15 (IANS). Amid preparations for the election held in Singapore on May 3 on May 3, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said Tuesday that at this critical point: “The people of Singapore have to decide on the team leading their country.” Wong said in a Facebook post: “The global conditions that have contributed to the success of Singapore over the past decades may not be upheld now.” He further said that this is the reason that he announced the general election. Earlier Tuesday, Wong President Therman Shanmugaratnam advised to dissolve parliament, who officially began the election process. The nomination was announced on April 23, when the political parties announce the final list of their candidates who disputed in 33 Singapore constituencies. Voters will vote for the groups of individual candidates or candidates to represent their constituency in parliament. After nomination, rallies, door-to-door campaign, pamphlet distribution, posters and banners will be allowed to be allowed nine days, including online political advertising. The election campaign will be limited on May 2, which is prescribed a quiet term to consider the issues raised for voters. Wong, who became prime minister in May 2024 after Li Scene Loon’s tenure of Loon, will lead the ruling People’s Action Party (Pap) in the upcoming general election. Pap, which rules Singapore for more than 60 years, gained 61.24 percent votes in the general election of 2020, while in 2015 it received 69.86 percent votes. The only opposition to winning the seats in 2020 increased the Workers Party its parliamentary representation in 2020 to 10 in 2015. This election is being held amid increasing concerns about global trade stress. Senior leaders in Singapore, including Wong and senior minister Lee, recently warned that new US rates could weaken global free trade and jeopardize small, open economies such as Singapore. -Ians Sch/CBT Share this story Tags
