SIT to file chargesheet in Zubeen Garg death case by November: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, October 16 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of noted singer Zubeen Garg is likely to submit its charge sheet by November. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said the state government would soon request the Gauhati High Court to set up a fast-track court to ensure speedy trial of the much-discussed case. He also confirmed that the state will appoint a special public prosecutor to conduct the proceedings, underscoring the administration’s commitment to transparent and speedy justice. Chief Minister Sarma said, “The SIT has been directed to complete its work expeditiously and we are hopeful that the charge sheet will be filed by November. The government will also request the Supreme Court to set up a fast-track court so that the trial can proceed without any delay.” On the recent disruption in the Baksa District Jail related to this case, the Chief Minister said that nine people have been arrested so far after identification through video evidence. Those detained include Noorul Alom, member of the All Bodoland Minority Students Union (ABMSU) Mahidul Islam, ABMSU’s Mustafa Ahmed, Sipjon Ali, Sahidul, Ahela Mia (listed as D voter), Ramiz Ali, Asiq and former member of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) Harekrishna Pathak. Chief Minister Sarma further said that the two youths injured in the incident are undergoing treatment at AIIMS and their condition is said to be stable. “I asked my cabinet colleague Ranjit Das to go to AIIMS on Thursday morning as some reports wrongly claimed that both the injured were dead. The minister confirmed that both are stable and receiving proper medical care,” he said. The chief minister dismissed speculations of any death in the Baksa incident and reiterated that there was no death.
